Who we need
Yorkville University acknowledges with respect that our New Westminster campus is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Halkomelem-speaking peoples. In the spirit of deepening our commitment to truth, responsibility, and transformative education, we are hiring an Indigenous Studies scholar and educator to join our community in a full-time, in-person faculty role.
As a valued member of the Yorkville University community, you will shape meaningful learning experiences, foster inclusive student engagement, and contribute to the broader academic and cultural goals of Yorkville University. This position is part of our ongoing effort to engage with Indigenous knowledge systems meaningfully, foster community-based learning, and uphold Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and relating in higher education.
This is a full-time, on-site role at the New Westminster Campus, teaching 3-4 sections per term, with four terms in the school year.
What’s in it for you
Impact. This is a meaningful opportunity to bring your voice, knowledge, and lived experience into a full-time university teaching role while continuing to honour your community, your commitments, and your own professional or academic journey. Your impact will be wide-reaching. You will help shape Indigenous Studies by centering Indigenous perspectives within curriculum, building community, and embedding inclusive pedagogy.
Purpose. Yorkville University is a progressive private institution reimagining how education is delivered; you will be at the forefront of something greater: creating and leading transformative, culturally grounded course content that resonates with today’s diverse student body. Here, traditional long-form lectures give way to dynamic, collaborative classrooms that honour dialogue, storytelling, and non-Eurocentric approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment.
Professional growth and influence. You will have the opportunity to help grow and shape Indigenous programming within British Columbia and beyond. Working closely with the Program Chair and the Indigenous Curriculum Facilitator, you will help guide the future of Indigenous Studies at Yorkville, with opportunities to expand into course development, research, and national engagement.
As the new Full-time Faculty, Indigenous Studies, you will:
- Create transformative learning experiences. You will deliver undergraduate courses aligned with program and institutional outcomes. You will move beyond lecture-based instruction to create collaborative, culturally responsive, and participatory learning environments. Your teaching will reflect inclusive practices that honour diverse identities, experiences, and learning needs. You will assess learning using thoughtful, equitable approaches, guiding students toward Yorkville’s Signature Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and supporting their development as learners, professionals, and citizens.
- Support student success. You will foster a respectful and supportive classroom culture where students feel seen, heard, and encouraged. Through regular office hours, responsive communication, and timely, constructive feedback, you will help them navigate academic challenges and celebrate progress. You will empower students with access and connections to appropriate university resources, recognizing that learning is linked to well-being, community, and belonging.
- Contribute to curriculum and program development. You will work with faculty and leadership to enhance content, develop new materials, and support assessment and accreditation. Your efforts will advance the program’s Indigenization and decolonization goals, centring Indigenous worldviews, practices, and knowledge systems in meaningful, sustained ways.
- Engage in academic service and community collaboration. You will participate in committees, governance, and initiatives strengthening the university. These contributions will promote academic excellence, equity, wellness, and continuous improvement. You will build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, aligning academic contributions with community engagement and reconciliation.
- Continue growing as an educator and scholar. You will reflect on your teaching, draw from student feedback, and pursue professional growth. Through development, research, or community involvement, you will seek knowledge that enhances both your learning and that of your students. Where applicable, you will maintain credentials and contribute to scholarship or practice with real-world impact.
- Leverage technology and shared expertise. You will use platforms like Brightspace and other technologies to support accessible, secure, and engaging learning. You will collaborate with student services, teaching and learning design, and academic leadership to uphold program quality and integrity.
You have:
- The experience. You have walked alongside and within Indigenous communities in British Columbia and bring a deep understanding of their histories, realities, and relationships. As an educator, community leader, artist, or advocate, you have contributed meaningfully to Indigenous initiatives and cultural knowledge-sharing. You are an active listener, an innovative educator, and a flexible facilitator.
- The education and academic background. You are a member of the Indigenous Peoples of North America or have worked closely with Indigenous communities. You hold a Master’s degree—ideally in Indigenous Studies or a related field—or bring an equivalent combination of education and community-based knowledge. While a PhD or terminal degree is preferred, what matters most is your ability to teach in a deep, meaningful, and respectful way.
- The teaching skills. You bring content to life in ways that reflect diverse worldviews, learning styles, and student backgrounds. You move beyond lectures to engage learners through discussion, storytelling, interactive activities, and alternative assessment methods. You prioritize inclusion and create a classroom where all students—especially those early in their cultural journey—feel respected, supported, and inspired. Experience teaching international or mature students is a strong asset.
- The collaboration. You are committed to working in partnership with faculty, students, and Indigenous communities. You bring strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to navigate conflict with respect and care.
- The leadership. You see this role as more than a teaching position; it is a chance to help lead the ongoing decolonization and reconciliation efforts in higher education. You are ready to work alongside the Chair and Indigenous Curriculum Facilitator to grow the Indigenous Studies program across British Columbia and potentially beyond, contributing to curriculum development, research, and community engagement that reflects Indigenous values and worldviews.
- The technical skills. You are open to learning and using MS Office, LMS platforms and educational technologies.
